2010 - 2014

Beginnings

AC charging at home and at work spread around 3.7–7.4kW, with the conversion being done by the on-board car charger.

In Europe, the Mode 3, Type 2 connector became standard, also confirmed by an EU decision in 2013, so the connection became simple and compatible.
The first wall stations focused on safety, simple installation and reliability; clean and compact Scandinavian design made Zaptec, Easee, Amina and Charge Amps desirable solutions.
Buyers got convenient charging at home and predictable electricity bills, and early communication standards laid the foundation for today's smart functionality and broad Type 2 compatibility.

2015 - 2019

Deployment

AC power stabilized at 11–22 kW, multi-station installations and dynamic load sharing spread.

OCPP became widespread, paving the way for independent monitoring and billing systems.
Charge Amps Aura with two 22kW outlets offered dual charging, saving space, while Zaptec brought scalable community charging with cloud-based management.
Buyers won in aesthetics, reliability and future-proof; for installers, remote monitoring and OTA updates have reduced total cost of ownership.
Dynamic load sharing enabled the installation of a large number of power-constrained points, and OCPP became an expectation until the end of the era.

2020 - 2025

Uniform standards

Today's AC charging stations are network connected, OTA upgradeable and generally OCPP 1.6 compatible, while the market is moving towards 2.0.1.

Zaptec Go with eco mode and consumption tracking helps to charge cheaper, and Zaptec Sense protects the main fuse. Easee's 2024 compliance audits have confirmed European compliance of the RCD and related safety functions. Amina offers options from the 7.4kW home solution to commercial models with local OCPP capability and smart home integration. Charge Amps Dawn with certified MID meter, 22 kW and permanent cloud connection supports accurate settlement and transparent operation. For buyers, this means more convenient, cheaper and more predictable charging; operators experience better KPIs and fewer trips. The 2024 AFIR consolidates ad-hoc and card payment at public points, and ISO 15118-20 provides the basis for identification and two-way energy flow on the AC side.

2025 - 2027

Developments on the horizon

The unification of Plug and Charge and the introduction of standardized PKI, app and cardless, bring quick-start charging to the AC environment as well, with fewer erroneous transactions and a reduced support burden.

After AFIR, open card payment and ad hoc access will become more predictable everywhere, as brands adapt their terminal and software solutions. Zaptec and Easee's powerful OCPP integration enables unified management of access, settlement and reporting in external CPMS systems. Amina C is hardware ready for OCPP 2.0.1 and modern encryption, promising a longer product life cycle and better cyber security. Charge Amps with MID metering and advanced programming pave the way to dynamic charging and solar self-consumption. For installers, the next step is the combination of local and cloud control, which provides reliable operation even in the event of an internet outage.

Innovations in the industry

With two-way AC energy exchange based on ISO 15118-20, the vehicle can not only charge, but also return energy: V2H to home, V2G to network providers.

This means in practice that households and fleets can help the grid as flexible energy stores, while the user automatically charges in the cheapest and greenest periods based on tariff signals, and in peak times can reduce the load or even sell back. Zaptec's price tracking and phase load control modes are nicely suited to household needs, with Easee and Amina providing stable operation in mixed network environments through local OCPP and strong security profiles. Charge Amps, with MID metering and flexible connectivity, are ideal for settlement-sensitive condominium and corporate installations. Operators can automate more and more error handling, reporting and dynamic rates through OCPP 2.0.1 and open APIs, and longer lifecycle is ensured by OTA upgradeability and modular construction. For users, this all works friendly, almost invisible in the background.
