OPPC protocol: what does it mean and what is its importance in EV charging?

In the world of electric car chargers, we’re increasingly seeing the acronym “OPPC,” especially when it comes to charging management and energy optimization. But what exactly does this protocol mean and why is it important?

OPPC (Open Protocol for Power Control) is an open communication standard that allows devices from different manufacturers – such as EV chargers, inverters, energy management systems – to work together in a coordinated manner. Its essence is to regulate the power of EV chargers in a uniform way based on external inputs.

Why is this necessary?
 Charging an electric car can require up to 11-22 kW, which is a significant load on the home or business electrical network. If the charger operates “standalone”, it can ignore the operation of other consumers – such as a heat pump or solar inverter – and can easily become overloaded.

The OPPC protocol allows the charger to dynamically adapt to the grid load or available solar energy. For example, if household consumption increases, the charger will automatically reduce power. If there is overproduction during the day, charging can be increased.

What devices are supported?
 Several premium EV charging brands – such as Zaptec, Easee or Fronius inverters – already support OPPC-based control. This will be the core functionality of future smart grid systems.
